What Is a Google Business Profile? A 2026 Guide for Shops

Rina runs a small sweet shop near Johari Bazaar in Jaipur. Her mithai is famous in the lane, but when her nephew searched "best sweet shop near Johari Bazaar" on his phone, three other shops showed up on the map before hers. Her shop was not even listed properly. People walking past with Google Maps open never saw her name.

This happens to thousands of good businesses every day. Not because the business is bad. Because nobody ever sat down and set up the one thing that decides whether you show up on Google at all: your Google Business Profile.

If you run a salon, a clinic, a restaurant or a shop, this is worth ten minutes of your time.

What a Google Business Profile Actually Is

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows up when someone searches for your business name, or for what you sell, on Google Search or Google Maps.

It is the box you see on the right side of a search result, with:

  • Your business name, address and phone number
  • Your opening hours
  • Photos
  • Your star rating and reviews
  • A map pin showing where you are
  • Buttons like Call, Directions and Website

If you have ever searched "dentist near me" or "salon in Lajpat Nagar" and seen a list of businesses with stars and photos, you were looking at Google Business Profiles.

It Is Not the Same as a Website

A lot of owners think having a Google listing means they do not need a website, or the other way round. They do different jobs.

Your Google profile is how people find you. It shows up when someone is searching nearby, deciding between you and three competitors in the next lane. Your website is where people learn more and trust you once they have found you. One pulls people in. The other convinces them to actually call or walk in.

We will cover how the two work together later in this series.

Why Your Shop Needs One in 2026

Here is what has changed. A few years ago, people called a shop they already knew, or asked a neighbour. Today, even loyal customers open Google first, just to check timings or see photos before they visit.

A good Google Business Profile helps with:

  • Being found. A dentist in Pune with a complete profile shows up when someone nearby searches "dentist near me". One with no profile simply does not appear in that list. One that is unclaimed may appear, but with hours, photos and details the owner cannot control.
  • Being trusted. A profile with real photos, filled-in hours and recent reviews tells a stranger this is a real, active business, not a shut shop or a scam number.
  • Saving you phone calls. When your hours, address and services are visible on Google, fewer people call just to ask "are you open now" or "where exactly are you".
  • Showing your reputation. Reviews and star ratings are often the first thing a new customer checks before they even look at your menu or price list.

None of this guarantees you will rank top of Google or get more calls overnight. But a profile that is claimed, complete and kept current is simply far more likely to be seen than one that is empty or abandoned.

How to Check If You Already Have One

Many owners are surprised to learn a profile already exists for their business, created automatically by Google, sitting unclaimed.

To check:

  1. Search your business name plus your area on Google, for example "Sharma Beauty Salon Janakpuri".
  2. If a box appears on the right with your details, a profile exists.
  3. Look for a "Claim this business" or "Own this business" link. If you see it, nobody has claimed it yet.
  4. If nothing appears at all, you need to create a new profile from scratch at google.com/business.

Setting It Up Properly

Whether you are claiming an old profile or starting fresh, get these basics right first:

  • Business name. Use your real name, not keywords stuffed in, like "Salon Best Haircut Cheap Janakpuri". Google does not allow this and it looks unprofessional.
  • Category. Choose the closest match, such as "Beauty salon" or "Dental clinic", not something vague like "Shop".
  • Address. Exact and matching your signboard, so Google Maps sends people to the right gate.
  • Phone number. One that is actually answered during business hours.
  • Hours. Including your weekly off and any days you close early.
  • Photos. Clear photos of your shopfront, inside, and your work or products.

Google will usually ask you to verify the business, often by a short video recording of your shop, a phone call or text, or an email. Google decides which method you are offered. This happens before the profile goes fully live.

What This Means If You Have Never Logged In

If you already have a profile but have not opened it in months, you are not alone. Most small business owners claim their profile once, and never go back. Hours go out of date after a festival break. A phone number changes and is never updated. Photos stay from years ago.

An old, half-filled profile is better than nothing, but it is leaving a lot on the table. The good news is that fixing it does not take long once you know what to check, which is exactly what the rest of this series covers.

FAQs

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes, creating and maintaining a Google Business Profile is completely free. Google does not charge for a basic listing.

Do I need a website if I already have a Google Business Profile?

They work together. Your Google profile helps people find you nearby. Your website gives them more detail and builds trust once they have found you.

How long does it take for a new profile to appear on Google?

It varies, usually a few days to a couple of weeks after verification, depending on Google's review process.

Can I have more than one Google Business Profile for the same shop?

No. Having duplicate profiles for one location confuses customers and goes against Google's guidelines. If you find a duplicate, report it to merge or remove it.

What happens if I never update my profile?

It stays visible, but outdated hours, old photos and no recent reviews can make customers unsure whether you are still open or active.

Can apna.live create a Google Business Profile for me?

No. You create and own your Google Business Profile directly with Google. apna.live helps you manage and improve a profile you already have, once you connect it.
