Mahesh runs a gym in Indore. Good equipment, loyal members, five years in business. But when his cousin searched "gym near me" on Google, Mahesh's listing showed up with no photos, no description, and hours that said "Hours not provided." Right below him, a newer gym with half the members had a full profile, bright photos and a 4.5 rating showing clearly. Guess which one the cousin tapped on.
Mahesh was not doing anything wrong. He had simply never finished setting up his profile. This happens to almost every shop owner, because nobody tells you what "finished" even looks like. That is where a profile health score comes in.
What a Profile Health Score Actually Is
A health score is a simple number, usually out of 100, that tells you how complete and useful your Google Business Profile is. It checks whether you have filled in the basics that help customers decide to call you or walk in, things like:
- Your opening hours and holiday hours
- A clear business description
- Your website and WhatsApp links
- Recent photos
- Regular posts and updates
A low score does not mean your business is bad. It usually just means some simple fields were left empty when the profile was first created, often years ago, and nobody has gone back to fill them in.
Why This Number Matters to a Real Customer
Think about the last time you searched for a shop or a doctor on Google. If one listing had photos, a description and recent activity, and the other was bare, which one did you trust more? Customers do this same comparison, often in a few seconds, before they decide who to call.
A complete profile does not guarantee you rank higher or get more calls. But it removes the small doubts that make a customer scroll past you to the next listing, the "is this place even open" or "do they look legit" doubts.
The Checklist Behind the Score
Most health scores are built from the same handful of checks. Go through this list for your own profile right now.
1. Hours, Including Holidays
A profile with regular hours filled in but no holiday hours is a common gap. If you are closed for Diwali, Eid or a local festival and do not update this, customers turn up to a shut shutter. A salon in Lajpat Nagar that forgets to mark its Republic Day closing will get annoyed calls and a possible bad review, for something that takes ten seconds to fix.
2. A Proper Description
Many profiles either have no description, or one copied in a hurry years ago. Your description should say what you do, where you are, and what makes you worth choosing, in plain language. We will cover exactly how to write one later in this series.
3. Website and WhatsApp Links
If a customer wants to see your menu, your price list or your work before calling, a missing website link sends them to your competitor's listing instead, simply because that one had a link and yours did not.
4. Photos
A profile with three-year-old blurry photos or no photos at all looks abandoned, even if your shop is thriving. Fresh photos of your space, your work and your products are one of the easiest wins on this checklist.
5. Posts and Activity
An inactive profile, one that has not posted anything in months, quietly signals to customers that the business might not be active anymore. Regular posts, even small ones about offers or timings, keep the profile looking alive.
How to Raise Your Score Yourself
You do not need any tool to improve most of this. Log into your Google Business Profile and go field by field:
- Open the Info section. Fill in or correct your hours. Add holiday hours for every festival you plan to close for this year, not just the next one.
- Rewrite your description. Keep it to two or three honest sentences about your business, your area and your specialty.
- Add your links. If you have a website, paste the link. If you take orders or bookings on WhatsApp, add that link wherever Google allows it.
- Upload five to ten recent photos. Your shopfront, your counter, your work, your team. Avoid stock images, customers want to see the real place.
- Post something this week. Even a simple update like new timings or a seasonal offer keeps the profile active.
Do this once every month and your profile stays in good shape without much effort.
A Word of Caution
While working on your score, never be tempted to add anything misleading, like fake reviews, discounts in exchange for reviews, or asking only your happiest customers to post. Google can remove those reviews, stop new reviews on your profile, show a warning to customers, or suspend the profile, and it is not something we would ever suggest either.

FAQs
Is a health score the same as Google's own ranking?
No. A health score is a completeness check on your profile's fields. It is not an official Google ranking number, and a high score does not guarantee you will rank higher in search results.
How often should I check my score?
Once a month is enough for most small businesses, plus a quick check before any major festival or holiday.
Can I reach 100 without a website?
You can fill in most fields without one, but a missing website link will usually keep you from a perfect score, since it is one of the checks.
Does having more photos always help my score?
Having some recent, clear photos helps. There is no need to upload dozens, quality and recency matter more than quantity.
Will fixing my profile guarantee more calls?
No one can guarantee that. A complete, current profile generally helps customers trust and choose you more easily, but results vary by business and location.
Can apna.live fix my Google profile automatically without me checking anything?
No. apna.live shows you what is missing and makes simple fixes one tap away, but you always see and approve what changes before anything is updated.
