What a website enquiry is actually worth, in rupees

A simple calculation most owners have never done, and which settles almost every argument about what to spend on getting online.

What a website enquiry is actually worth, in rupees

Most decisions about websites, advertising and listings are made on gut feel, because nobody has worked out what one new customer is actually worth.

It takes ten minutes with a pen and it settles the question permanently.

Step 1 — What is one customer worth?

Not one sale. One customer, over the time they stay with you.

Average sale value × how many times a year they come × how many years they stay.

Some examples:

Salon: ₹1,200 a visit × 6 visits a year × 3 years = ₹21,600
Dentist: ₹4,500 first year, ₹2,000 a year after × 5 years = ₹12,500
Garage: ₹3,200 × 2 a year × 5 years = ₹32,000
Restaurant: ₹900 × 8 a year × 3 years = ₹21,600
Laundry: ₹600 a month × 12 × 4 years = ₹28,800
Boutique: ₹6,000 × 3 a year × 4 years = ₹72,000
Coaching centre: ₹2,200 a month × 10 months × 2 years = ₹44,000

Now subtract your costs to get the profit on that customer. If your margin is 40%, a ₹21,600 salon customer is about ₹8,600 of profit over three years.

Most owners are surprised by this number. They have been thinking about the ₹1,200 haircut.

Step 2 — How many enquiries become customers?

Not every enquiry converts. Count honestly for two weeks: how many people call or message, and how many actually come.

Typical for local businesses: 20% to 50%. Services with a booking step convert lower; walk-in retail converts higher.

Say 30%.

Step 3 — What is one enquiry worth?

Customer profit × conversion rate.

Salon: ₹8,600 × 30% = ₹2,580 per enquiry.

Read that again. Every single phone call from someone who found you online is worth, on average, more than two thousand rupees to that salon.

What this changes

Once you have that number, several arguments end.

"₹150 a month for a website is expensive." The salon needs one extra enquiry every seventeen months to break even. Not one customer — one enquiry.

"I do not have time to reply to WhatsApp messages." Each unanswered message is ₹2,580 walking to a competitor. Ten a week is ₹25,800 a week.

"I do not want to publish prices, they should call and ask." Every person who leaves because there was no price is that same ₹2,580. And most of them do not call.

"The phone rang while I was with a customer, they will call back." They will not. They call the next business in about fifteen seconds.

"Reviews are not that important." A rating below 4.0 stops most people from tapping at all. That is not a few lost enquiries — it is most of them.

The leak nobody measures

Here is the uncomfortable part. Businesses track what they spend and what they earn. Almost nobody tracks what they lose.

  • Calls that rang out.
  • WhatsApp messages answered the next day.
  • People who could not find a price.
  • People who arrived when Google said open and you were shut.
  • Enquiries quoted and never followed up.

Each of these has a rupee value now. Multiply by frequency and the numbers get uncomfortable quickly. Five missed calls a week, at ₹2,580 each, is ₹6,70,000 a year.

That is not a marketing problem. It is an operational one, and it is fixable this week without spending anything.

Do the counting

For two weeks, keep a sheet — paper is fine:

| Date | How they found us | Enquiry or walk-in | Converted? | Value |

At the end you will know: how many enquiries you get, where they come from, what share converts, and what each one is worth.

That single sheet is more useful than any advice, including this article, because it is about your business rather than a generic one.

Then decide

With those numbers you can evaluate anything.

A directory package at ₹30,000 a year needs to bring twelve enquiries to break even for that salon. Is that plausible?

A website at ₹1,800 a year needs less than one.

Ads at ₹200 a click need better than a 1-in-13 conversion.

You are no longer guessing. And in almost every case the conclusion is the same: the cheapest thing you can do is stop losing the enquiries you are already getting.
