How much should a small business website cost in India?
Ask three people what a website costs and you will get ₹5,000, ₹50,000 and ₹5,00,000. All three are honest answers to different questions. Here is how to work out which question applies to you.
What you will actually be quoted
A local freelancer: ₹8,000 – ₹30,000. Usually a WordPress theme customised with your content. Fine work in the right hands. The risk is what happens in month seven when the freelancer has moved on and something breaks.
A small agency: ₹40,000 – ₹1,50,000. A designed site, a few rounds of revisions, and someone to call. Reasonable if you need something specific. Frequently over-specified for a shop that needs six pages and a phone number.
A large agency: ₹3,00,000 and up. Real value if you are a brand with a marketing team. If you are a salon, a clinic or a retail shop, you are paying for process you will not use.
A website builder you run yourself: ₹500 – ₹2,000 a month. No design fee, but you do the work — writing, choosing, uploading, maintaining.
A managed service: a few hundred rupees a month. Someone else builds and hosts it, you edit the content.
The costs nobody puts in the quote
This is where owners get caught. The build price is not the price.
- Domain — ₹700 to ₹1,200 a year, forever. Must stay in your name, not your developer's.
- Hosting — ₹3,000 to ₹15,000 a year, forever.
- SSL certificate — often bundled now, sometimes a separate ₹2,000+.
- Maintenance — WordPress plugins and themes need updating. Skipped updates are how small business sites get hacked and start serving spam.
- Changes — this is the big one. Ask upfront what a text change costs after handover. If the answer is "₹1,500 per change", your prices will be wrong on that site within a year, because you will not pay ₹1,500 to fix a typo.
- Content — someone has to write the words and take the photos. If it is not in the quote, it is your evenings.
A ₹25,000 site with ₹12,000 a year of running costs is a ₹61,000 site over three years. Quote it to yourself that way before you compare.
How to work out what it is worth
Forget the market rate for a moment and do this sum for your own business.
What is one new customer worth to you? Not one transaction — one customer, including the times they come back. A salon customer might be ₹1,500 a visit and come six times a year. A dentist's patient might be ₹8,000 the first year. A tyre shop might be ₹2,500 twice a year.
Now: how many extra customers a month would the website need to bring for it to pay for itself?
At ₹150 a month, a salon needs one extra customer every ten months. At ₹40,000 upfront plus ₹1,000 a month running, that same salon needs roughly two extra customers a month for the first two years just to break even.
Both can be worth it. But the second one is a real bet, and it should be made deliberately rather than because a quote sounded impressive.
What actually decides whether it works
Here is the uncomfortable part: past a fairly low bar, the money you spend has very little to do with whether the site brings you customers.
What decides it is:
- Does it load fast on a cheap phone on mobile data?
- Does it say clearly what you do, where, and how much?
- Is your phone number visible without scrolling?
- Are the photos real and current?
- Does it match your Google listing exactly — same name, same address, same phone?
- Is the content still true six months from now?
A ₹1,50,000 site that fails the last point is worth less than a ₹500-a-month site that passes all six. And the last point is entirely about whether you can edit it easily, which is a question about the tool, not the budget.
What we would tell a shop owner
If you run a local business — a salon, clinic, gym, restaurant, workshop, retail shop — you do not need a bespoke build. You need six good pages, honest photos, your services with prices, and your phone number everywhere. Then you need to be able to change them yourself, in two minutes, from your phone, forever.
Spend the money you saved on photographs and on getting reviews. Those move your numbers more than any amount of design.
If you are building something genuinely custom — a booking system with real inventory, a marketplace, software — that is a different conversation and a different budget. Do not let anyone sell you the second thing when you need the first.
Apna.live builds it from your Google listing and you edit it yourself, on the page. ₹149 a month, no build fee. See yours first.
