Google Ads, or fix your listing first?

Ads work, and they are also the most common way small businesses waste money. When to spend, when to fix things first, and how to not lose your budget in a week.

Google Ads, or fix your listing first?

Google Ads puts you at the top of search results for money. It works, it is instant, and it is also where a great many small business budgets go to die.

The deciding question is not "do ads work". It is "am I ready for the traffic".

The leaky bucket problem

Advertising sends people to your business. What happens when they arrive is decided by things that have nothing to do with the ad.

Suppose you spend ₹20,000 and get four hundred clicks. Those people land, and then:

  • They see a 3.8 rating with eleven reviews, and leave.
  • They cannot find your price, and leave.
  • The site takes eight seconds on mobile data, and leave.
  • They call, nobody answers, and they call the next business.

You have paid ₹50 a click to lose people at the last step. And you would have lost them for free too — the ads just made it expensive.

Fix the bucket before you turn on the tap. Every rupee of ad spend is multiplied or divided by what happens after the click.

The checklist before you spend anything

If you cannot tick all of these, spend the money on fixing them first. All of them are cheaper than a month of ads.

  1. Rating above 4.0, with at least thirty reviews. Below this, most ad clicks bounce.
  2. A website that loads in under three seconds on mobile data.
  3. Prices visible, at least as ranges, for your main services.
  4. A phone number that is answered during the hours you advertise.
  5. A specific landing page for whatever you are advertising — not your home page.
  6. A way to know where enquiries came from. A separate number, or a form that records the source.

That last one is not optional. Without it you will spend money for months and never know whether it worked.

When ads genuinely make sense

You are new and have no reviews or ranking yet. Ads buy visibility while the slow things build. Treat it as a bridge, not a permanent state.

Your category is urgent. Emergency plumbing, AC repair, towing, locksmiths, ambulances. Someone with a burst pipe clicks the first result and does not scroll.

You have a genuinely time-limited campaign. A festival collection, a new branch opening, a seasonal service.

Your customer value is high. If one new patient is worth ₹15,000, a ₹400 cost per enquiry is easy maths. If one customer is worth ₹300, it very rarely is.

Your organic position is already good and you want the extra slot. This is the strongest case, and the least common, because it requires having done the other work first.

When they do not

Low ticket size. If your average sale is a few hundred rupees, click costs in competitive categories will eat the margin.

Your fundamentals are broken. Covered above. Ads amplify what is already there, including the bad parts.

You cannot answer the phone. The fastest way to waste money in existence.

You are hoping ads will substitute for reviews. They will not. A customer clicks the ad, sees the rating, and leaves.

How to not lose your budget in a week

If you do run ads:

Set a low daily cap. ₹300–₹500 a day to start. It is easy to spend ₹20,000 in three days on the wrong keywords.

Use exact and phrase match, not broad. Broad match is how you end up paying for "free dental treatment government hospital" when you are a private clinic.

Build a negative keyword list on day one. free, cheap, jobs, salary, vacancy, course, how to, DIY, government, second hand. Add to it weekly by reading the actual search terms report — this is the single most valuable habit in running ads.

Restrict the location tightly. Your actual catchment. Not the whole city, and definitely not the whole country. Check the setting for "people in or regularly in your locations" rather than the default, which can include people merely showing interest in the area.

Schedule ads to your open hours. Do not pay for clicks at 2am if nobody answers at 2am.

Send clicks to a specific page. Someone who clicked "bridal makeup package price" should land on the bridal makeup page, with prices. Not your home page.

Use call extensions, so people can call straight from the ad.

Review the search terms report weekly, without fail. This is where you find out you have been paying for something irrelevant for eleven days.

The honest comparison

Ads are rented traffic. Stop paying, it stops instantly, and nothing has accumulated.

Reviews, a complete listing and real pages are owned. They take three to six months to build, they keep working with no monthly cost, and they compound.

A reasonable approach for most small businesses: spend the first three months and a modest budget getting the fundamentals right, and only then, if you still want speed, layer ads on top of something that converts.

Running ads to a broken funnel is the most reliable way to conclude that "online marketing does not work for our business", when what actually happened is that it was never given anything to work with.
