Your phone number is your website's most important feature
Designers argue about colours and layouts. For a local business website, the thing that decides whether it earns anything is far more boring: how easily a customer can reach you at the moment they decide to.
In India, that almost always means a phone call or a WhatsApp message. Not a contact form. Not an email.
Here is what to fix.
1. Make it tappable
If your number is written as plain text, a customer on a phone has to select it, copy it, switch to the dialler and paste. Many will not bother.
Every phone number on your site should be a link that opens the dialler on one tap. In HTML that is a tel: link, and any decent website tool does it automatically. Test it on your own phone right now. If tapping your number does nothing, that is your highest-value fix today.
The same applies to WhatsApp. A wa.me link that opens a chat — ideally with a message already written, like "Hi, I saw your website and wanted to ask about…" — removes two steps and gets used far more than a bare number.
2. Put it where the thumb already is
The number needs to be visible without scrolling, at the top of every page, and again at the bottom.
On a phone, the most valuable spot on the screen is a fixed bar at the bottom — a Call button and a WhatsApp button that stay put as the customer scrolls. It sounds crude. It is the single most effective element on most local business sites, because it means the customer never has to go looking at the moment they decide.
3. One number, everywhere
Your website, your Google listing, your Instagram bio, your bills and your board should all show the same number.
Different numbers in different places causes two problems. Customers call the one that goes to a phone nobody has carried since last year. And Google, which cross-checks your details across the web to decide how confident it is about your business, sees inconsistency where it wants agreement.
Pick one. Change the others.
4. Answer it
This is not a website point, but it undoes everything above, so it belongs here.
A number that rings out during business hours wastes every rupee and every hour that went into being found. If you genuinely cannot answer during service, say so in plain words on the site — "We are with customers between 1 and 4pm. Message on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day" — and then actually reply.
An honest expectation kept is much better than an unanswered ring.
5. Say what happens when they call
A small line of text near the button removes hesitation more effectively than any design change.
- "Call us — we usually pick up within two rings."
- "WhatsApp us a photo of the problem and we will send an estimate."
- "Call for an appointment. Walk-ins welcome before 6pm."
People hesitate because they do not know what they are getting into. Tell them.
6. Stop relying on contact forms
Contact forms have their place — enquiries that need detail, orders, things that arrive when you are closed. But for a local business they should never be the main way to reach you.
A form asks the customer to type, and then to trust that someone will read it. A call is immediate and certain. Given both, most Indian customers choose the call.
If you do have a form, keep it to three fields — name, phone, what they need. Every extra field loses people. Asking for an email address on a form aimed at local customers loses a surprising number of them.
And make sure the form actually reaches you. Test it monthly. A silently broken form is one of the most common and most expensive faults on small business websites — you assume business is slow, when in fact enquiries have been going nowhere for four months.
A quick test
Open your website on your own phone, on mobile data, as if you were a customer.
- Can you see a way to call within one second of the page loading, without scrolling?
- Does tapping it open the dialler with the right number?
- Is there a WhatsApp option?
- Is the same number on your Google listing?
- If you fill in the form, does it arrive?
Anything that fails there is costing you customers today, and all of it can be fixed this afternoon.
Every Apna.live site has a fixed call and WhatsApp bar, wired to the number on your Google listing. See yours.
