The home services playbook — electricians, plumbers, carpenters

The home services playbook — electricians, plumbers, carpenters

Home services are unlike other local businesses in one important way: a large share of the demand is urgent. A pipe is leaking now. The AC has stopped in May. The power is out in half the house.

An urgent customer behaves differently. They do not browse, they do not compare carefully, and they call the first business that looks like it will actually turn up.

Everything below follows from that.

You are a service-area business

Most tradespeople work at the customer's home, not at a shop. Google supports this properly.

Set your Google Business Profile as a service-area business: you can hide your street address and instead list the areas you cover. This is the correct setup and it stops you looking like a shop customers should visit.

List the areas by the names people actually use — sectors, colonies, localities, not just "Delhi".

The three things an urgent customer checks

Will they pick up? By far the most important. A number that rings out during a leak loses the customer permanently.

Will they come today? Say so explicitly. "Same-day visits across Sector 40–52. Usually within two hours." This one sentence is worth more than any amount of design.

Roughly what will it cost? The fear is being overcharged by someone who knows you are desperate. Publishing a visiting charge removes it.

"Visiting charge ₹300, adjusted against the repair if you go ahead. We tell you the cost before we start any work."

That paragraph converts better than almost anything else you can write, because it addresses the exact thing people are afraid of.

Answer the phone, or lose the job

Blunt, but this is the whole business.

If you are under a sink and cannot answer, the call is gone — the customer calls the next number in about fifteen seconds. Options:

  • A family member or helper who answers and takes details.
  • A WhatsApp number stated clearly, with a promise you actually keep. "If I do not pick up, WhatsApp me — I reply between jobs."
  • Call back the moment you are free. A callback in ten minutes still often wins.

Missed calls are the largest single leak in this business and they are invisible in your accounts.

Photographs of the work, not of you

Tradespeople rarely photograph anything, and it costs them.

Take a photo of every completed job. The new wiring board, the repaired pipe, the fitted geyser, the finished carpentry. Before and after where possible.

This does three things: it proves you can do the work, it shows you take pride in it, and it fills your Google listing with the fresh content that keeps it ranking.

Ask the customer first. Most say yes.

Reviews are the entire trust mechanism

There is no shopfront for a customer to judge, no premises to visit. Reviews are all they have.

The moment to ask is at the end of the job, when it is working and the customer is relieved. In person, out loud.

"Sir, if you are happy with the work, could you put a Google review? For us it makes a big difference — most of our work comes that way."

Have the QR code on your phone or on the receipt so it is one tap. A tradesperson with sixty reviews gets called ahead of one with four, every time, even at a higher price.

The searches to own

Urgent, specific and local:

  • emergency plumber near me
  • electrician near me open now
  • AC not cooling repair [area]
  • geyser repair [area]
  • water leakage repair [area]
  • carpenter for furniture repair near me
  • 24 hour electrician [city]
  • RO service near me
  • wardrobe / modular kitchen carpenter [area]

Two patterns matter: "open now" / "24 hour" and the specific fault. If you genuinely work late or on Sundays, that must be visible everywhere — it is the reason you get chosen over someone closer.

A page for each main service, mentioning the areas you cover, is how you appear for these.

The trust signals that cost nothing

Home services have a particular problem: you are asking someone to let a stranger into their house. Address it directly.

  • Your photograph and your name on the site. Not a logo — a face.
  • How long you have been working in the area.
  • Whether your team wear anything identifying.
  • Whether you give a written estimate before starting.
  • Whether there is a warranty on the work, and for how long.
  • That you carry your own tools and materials.

"I have been working in Vasant Kunj since 2011. I come myself for the first visit. You will get a price before any work starts, and a three-month guarantee on the repair."

That is more persuasive than any advertisement.

Repeat work is the whole business

A household that trusts a plumber calls the same plumber for the next fifteen years, and gives their number to neighbours.

So: save every customer's number with their address in the name. Message once a year — before summer for AC, before monsoon for waterproofing and drainage, before winter for geysers. Not a marketing blast. One line, personal.

"Sir, summer is starting — do you want me to come and service the AC before it gets busy?"

That message, sent to two hundred past customers each March, is the cheapest and most reliable work you will get all year.
